What is Paxil®?
Paxil®
is an antidepressant medication primarily used to treat anxiety disorders and symptoms of depression. It is a member of the SSRI (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor) family of drugs that also includes Zoloft®
and Prozac®.
Why is Paxil® dangerous?
In a public health advisory by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on December 8, 2005, women taking Paxil® during their first trimester of pregnancy were susceptible to increased risk of birth defects. Recent completed and preliminary studies show these women were nearly two times more likely to give birth to a child with a birth defect, in particular a heart defect or congenital malformation. As a result of these studies, the pregnancy category for Paxil® has been changed from C to D.
